This case study explores the journey of enhancing the iOS Health app to boost its daily active users. By investigating user needs, assessing existing functionalities, and employing motivational theory, we aimed to address the challenge of engaging users effectively. Ultimately, we proposed a feature – appointment scheduling with healthcare professionals – to add value to users and potentially increase app usage.
Challenge
The iOS Health app faced the challenge of low daily active users. Despite its potential, it struggled to engage iPhone users effectively. The primary issues included a lack of awareness among users, limited compatibility with third-party wearables, and a perceived absence of intentionality in its design. The goal was to transform the app into a more engaging and useful tool for a wider audience.
Solution
To tackle these challenges, we followed a structured approach:
Objective Setting
Our primary objective was to increase the number of daily active users.
Research and User Insights
We conducted research on the iOS Health app's features and gathered insights from users.
Motivational Theory Application
We applied Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to identify where the app met user needs and where it fell short. This analysis revealed opportunities to add features that catered to users' needs.
Opportunity Solution Tree
We generated ideas and prioritised solutions to increase the app's ability to fulfil user needs.
Feature Proposal
We proposed an innovative feature – appointment scheduling with healthcare practitioners – to meet a critical need, especially in the context of the ongoing pandemic.
Results
While the project did not have concrete success metrics at the time of this case study, the proposed feature had the potential to make the iOS Health app more valuable to users. It aimed to address a real need, particularly during the pandemic, and could contribute to increasing daily active users.
Lessons Learned:
Gathering and analysing user data is essential for informed decision-making.
Involving users in the design process and seeking feedback early can lead to more user-centric solutions.
Collaborating with a diverse team benefits from their domain and customer knowledge.
As this project progresses, success metrics, awards, and further reflections can provide a clearer picture of its impact on the iOS Health app and its user engagement.
